General Motors Continues To Try To Exempt Itself From Airbag Recall

Imagine that you own a vehicle with an inflator defect. However, General Motors, the manufacturer of the vehicle, has resisted recalling the vehicle and replacing them. There have been many stories about defective inflators popping up in the faces and inflicting severe injuries on passengers and drivers, as well as 16 deaths. 

You wonder if your vehicle's airbag could be next to explode. GM requested an exemption from NHTSA's recall of the defective component for the fourth consecutive year. General Motors claims that it has tested 4,270 defective inflators.

It did this by placing them under extreme heat and humidity without causing them to burst. The Detroit News quoted General Motors as saying that it was confident that the inflators pose no unreasonable safety risk.

The NHTSA ordered Takata (a Japanese manufacturer of airbags) to recall their defective airbags starting in 2015. GM filed a petition in 2016 to have its vehicles exempted from Takata's airbag recall.
